Eclipse Returns In 87th Geneva International Motor Show With Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Still, all hope may not be lost, as Mitsubishi promises that the vehicle's design will be as stunning as its namesake astronomical event.

The name is probably not too familiar with Aussie motorists, but it is derived from the USA market Eclipse, which is a two-door sports vehicle.

Whether the plug-in hybrid drivetrain of the Mitsubishi Outlander will expand to the Eclipse Cross remains to be seen.

Mitsubishi has revealed the name and first image of its all-new Eclipse Cross SUV. Details are fuzzy at the moment, but the Eclipse Cross has a more coupe-esque silhouette than the Outlander.

The new Eclipse Cross has some styling cues which are similar to the latest Mitsubishi Outlander, but the auto has a more coupe-like profile than either that or the more compact ASX.

The Eclipse Cross will slot between the small Outlander Sport and the larger, three-row Outlander in the brand's lineup.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the chosen name for Mitsubishi's new SUV created to sit between the ASX and Outlander. It also has coupe-like profile and classic SUV proportions with its long wheelbase and short rear overhang.

"The Eclipse Cross's attractive, dynamic form serves to bring about the same sense of excitement and inspiration as the diamond ring seen immediately before and after a total solar eclipse does", Mitsubishi said. It is also expected to rival Nissan's own compact crossover, the Qashqai.
