Now, Sasikala might exercise her hold within the party through loyalists, but she will need her relatives in power in order to keep the reins tighter.

Her manoeuvres since February 6 have precipitated high drama, including legislators sequestered in a beach resort.

The apex court's verdict on Tuesday scuttled Sasikala's hope of becoming the chief minister as it restored her conviction and a four-year jail sentence awarded by the trial court in the DA case in 2014.

Jayalalithaa, one of India's most powerful and revered politicians, died in December a year ago after a "massive" cardiac arrest.

He was tipped for the Chief Minister's post after Jayalalithaa died but that did not happen.Hailing from Nedungulam village in Salem district, Palaniswami belongs to the Gounder community.

There is no need for the governor to break his head over who should be asked to prove his majority in the House, Panneerselvam or Palaniswami, hand-picked by Sasikala to hold the office of chief minister on her behalf.

The current position of the Panneerselvam has once again become untenable in the roller coaster political developments of the state.

His aides said they would meet Election Commission officials in Delhi to complain that Sasikala had no right to be the AIADMK general secretary.

He began his career in AIADMK in 1974.

Nine legislators including a minister have joined Team Panneerselvam over the last few days, two of them since last night. Since then, he has been backed by several MPs and MLAs who have switched sides but a majority of the party lawmakers is said to be behind Sasikala. On Monday night, one of them, wearing only a T-shirt and shorts, scaled a wall to escape his temporary internment in the beach resort. Sasikala, on February 16 took the oath to become Tamil Nadu's chief minister, ending for now an ugly war within the ruling party.

"In the past, whenever Amma was in crisis, I also suffered".

"She also read a couple of Tamil newspapers, had tamarind rice for breakfast at 7.30 a.m. and a frugal meal (sambar rice) for lunch at 12.30", said Pugazhendi. "Dharma [or justice] will prevail".

A Bench comprising Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy also set aside the acquittal of Sasikala's two co-accused-J.

A Raj Bhavan statement said senior party leaders C. Sreenivasan and K.A. Sengottaiyan, the only new face in the cabinet, were appointed minister for forests and minister for school education and sports and youth welfare, respectively.

Governor Rao, who was on Monday advised by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi to convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly within a week for holding a composite floor test, is yet to take a call on whom to invite to form the government first or to go for a trial of strength in the assembly. Both the Governor and Court have kept her at bay and saved Tamil Nadu.

In the hours following Sasikala's conviction, Mr Panneerselvam expressed confidence to his supporters.
