Son of Jerry Sandusky charged with sexual assault of a child

The adopted son of Jerry Sandusky - the former Penn State University football coach convicted of child sex abuse - has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a child.

NPR's Jeff Brady reported the charges against 41-year-old Jeffrey Sandusky come more than four years after his father was convicted of child sexual abuse.

The elder Sandusky is serving a lengthy prison sentence for molesting 10 boys.

Dottie Sandusky, who stood by her husband's side during his trial and has continued to defend him, was emotional at her son's hearing, according to CNN, and said he was innocent.

The state Corrections Department said that because of the charges, Jeffrey Sandusky was suspended without pay Monday from employment as a corrections officer at Rockview State Prison, near State College.

"You don't know what to think". "We will prosecute this case as aggressively as we do all child abuse cases".

The investigation began in November 2016, police say, when a child claimed to have received a text message from the younger Sandusky.

"For me, and where I'm at, I'm only on the side of these victims. and hoping that they're receiving the love and support they need at this time", Matt Sandusky told PennLive in a telephone interview. An investigation conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh alleged that Sandusky's colleagues frequently covered up his abuse and showed a "total and consistent" disregard for the victims.

Jeffrey Sandusky is charged with statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, photographing, videographing, depicting on computer or filming sexual acts, and unlawful contact with a minor, reports CBS affiliate WKBN.

Jeffrey's preliminary hearing is set for February 22.

Jeffrey Sandusky is facing 14 counts.
