Russell Westbrook's reiterates MVP case with historic 31st triple-double

Westbrook had his 31st triple-double of the season to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 102-92 on Thursday night.

San Antonio found themselves in trouble in Thursday's matchup against Oklahoma City when Kawhi Leonard went down in the third quarter after an errant blow to the head from Thunder guard Victor Oladipo. Russell Westbrook signed another triple-double in a ideal night for Billy Donovan's team. But it's his 31st triple-double of the season, tying Wilt Chamberlain for the second-most by an National Basketball Association player in a season.

Westbrook is now 10 triple-doubles from matching the record set by Oscar Robertson (41) during the 1961-62 season.

Andre Drummond powered for 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons, who have won three of their past four games. The Thunder will look to trim the five game lead the Jazz have on them for the top spot in the Northwest Division.

This was the morning after Westbrook scored a career-high 58 points against the Portland Trail Blazers, a game the Thunder dropped for a demoralizing fourth straight loss.

For the first time this season, the Thunder had a starting lineup change that had nothing to do with an injury.

Eclectic energy pulsated throughout Chesapeake Energy Arena as Russell Westbrook (23 pts, 13 rebs, 13 asts) collected triple-double #31 of his campaign. Over the next 27 minutes and 53 seconds, the Spurs outscored us 81-43.

The OKC Thunder dominated the game nearly start to finish. As Westbrook goes, so go the Thunder, for the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs.

"It was a team effort", Popovich said.

Westbrook scored 15 points in the first half, and the Thunder led 56-49 at the break.

Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined to shoot just 4 for 17 from 3-point range as Golden State struggled again without injured star Kevin Durant, who spoke before the game wearing a bulky brace on his injured left knee and using crutches. Forward David Lee got the start in place of Aldridge and recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Before that, Westbrook was walking to the scorer's table midway through the quarter with the Thunder ahead 12.
