The CM said in the Assembly, which has been witnessing uproarious scenes on the demand of loan waiver, that the plight of the farmers is due to the policies of the previous Congress-NCP government, which ruled the State for 15 years. "The loan waiver, which works out to Rs 30,500 crore, is exactly the amount the government has already invested in the agriculture sector to benefit farmers". Fadnavis said that the farmers' loans in the had mounted to a total of Rs 1,14,000 crore.

"We have requested the government of India to design a scheme so that the debt of 31,000 farmers can be waived.the government of Maharashtra would participate in the scheme as per the fiscal space of the State", he said. "A delegation of the State Government will meet Union Finance Minister and Agriculture Minister to press for farm loan waiver", the Chief Minister sasid.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Tamil Nadu Finance Minister D Jayakumar were among those who met Jaitley to discuss various issues concerning farmers, including the loan waiver scheme. The visit to Delhi in the middle of session comes against the backdrop of Shiv Sena supporting opposition's demand of loan waiver for farmers. Fadnavis reiterated the government is not against the waiver but is of the view to waive the loan at the appropriate time. They, together with the Congress and NCP MLAs, rushed to the well of the House and shouted vociferous slogans demanding the farm loan waiver.

"After the announcement of loan waiver in 2007 by then Union government, farmers suicides came down by 80%".

The Chief Minister said that since the loan waiver scheme of 2008-2009, as many as 16,000 state farmers had committed suicide, and accused the opposition of playing politics over a critical and sensitive issue.

"While in the opposition, Fadnavis and other leaders raised the demand, but when they are in power now, they are reluctant to offer farm-loan waiver", Vikhe-Patil said. "The Opposition party is responsible for the mess with loan waivers". "The State Government is honest about intentions vis-a-vis the farm loan waiver".

Senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil today said the loan waiver granted by the erstwhile UPA government in 2007 had resulted into 80 per cent drop in suicides by farmers in subsequent years. Earlier, as soon as the House assembled for the day and Speaker called for the Question Hour, Shiv Sena legislators entered the Well of the House shouting slogans demanding loan waiver for farmers. Shiv Sena legislator Anil Kadam demanded that there be discussions with the centre before the budget is presented in the house on Saturday. "But their concern is to cover up the corruption in the banks by infusing more funds availed through crop loan", he said.
