College basketball: IL hires Brad Underwood as coach

A day after Oklahoma State's season ended with a one-point loss to MI in the NCAA Tournament, head coach Brad Underwood took the vacant position at IL on Saturday.

"I am excited to welcome Brad Underwood, his wife Susan, and their three children to the Fighting Illini family", Illini Athletic Josh Whitman said in a statement.

Underwood led the Cowboys to the NCAA tournament in his lone season with the school.

Underwood compiled an 89-14 record in three seasons at Stephen F. Austin and lost just one game in Southland Conference action in his first head coaching job.

Illinois' new identity will be executing at an elite level on offense, improving and playing hard on defense, and never giving in - which is what happened this past season at Oklahoma State. All of that gave Underwood a solid foundation when he finally became a Division I head coach at Stephen F. Austin in 2013.

IL confirmed the news Saturday afternoon.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news, and it was later confirmed by Gary Parrish of CBS Sports, who added that Underwood was underpaid at Oklahoma State. However, during my time at Western Illinois, I always saw the Illinois coaching job as one of the truly best in the nation. "Please join me in welcoming Brad and the Underwood family to Champaign-Urbana and the University of IL". Oklahoma State came on strong during the second half of the season, winning 10 of 11 games from January 21-Feb. But Brad Underwood figures to stay as head coach of Illinois Fighting Illini for as long as he likes. He was also an assistant coach for the Wildcats from 2006-12. IL went 18-14 this season, bowing out against MI in the Big Ten tournament.

Underwood was the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 Conference.

Underwood is a 1986 graduate of Kansas State. He stayed with Frank Martin after Huggins left for West Virginia and went along to SC when Martin left K-State. The Illini have reached the second round of the NIT and will face Boise State on Monday.
