Klopp in 'no doubt' about Guardiola's qualities ahead of latest showdown

Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16 on Wednesday, falling 3-1 at Monaco as the French side advanced to the quarterfinals on away goals after finishing 6-6 on aggregate.

Pep Guardiola has pledged to stick to his attacking instincts when Manchester City host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. I never saw a central defender of 21 years playing on the biggest stages who doesn't make mistakes.

"It was an outstanding combination". "We forgot to do that in the first half".

"In other countries it is hard". You can not compare one with the other. "Everything is legal, the culture is different".

"I am not in doubt about his quality, for all that maybe a few other people are", said Klopp. But he knows, I know better than him, how it works.

"For players and managers, it depends on the results, but I want to be involved in that as much as possible, and to help my team to make the next step and I have more power than ever in my life as a manager".

First-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho put the Ligue 1 leaders ahead and although Leroy Sane hit back for City, Tiemoue Bakayoko sealed victory with a header 13 minutes from time.

"To be active, you need to be courageous". Monaco couldn't do it in two halves.

"We wanted to show personality, not to let them think (that) they could pass and pass the ball", Guardiola said.

Spurs, Arsenal and City have all been happy to play their usual open, passing games against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp's men have feasted on it, using their press and hitting the opposition with devastating effect.

"I've heard about Pep Guardiola's style and all that stuff but it is real football and it is hard to defend against them and a lot of teams have failed already".

Vincent Kompany was omitted from the squad against Monaco despite being fully fit and is also expected to miss tomorrow's clash, but Guardiola said: "He was a long time injured and sometimes he played but was injured again so I could risk him and not be so sure (he would last)".

Liverpool's slump since the turn of the year may have dashed hopes of silverware but Klopp felt qualification for next season's Champions League would represent "an outstanding success". But they can learn, that's all you can do. They've got a massive game coming up with City.

"But with City and Liverpool separated by one point and one place in the battle for Champions League qualification, Sterling must feel this is the ideal time for him to wound those he knows so well".

"I'm really looking forward to it because it's a real challenge on the technical side of the game".
