Virbhadra Singh congratulates Amarinder Singh on Congress victory in Punjab

Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka, who won from Amritsar West (SC), said the Congress government's priority will be to end the state's drug menace which "flourished under the 10-year long regime of SAD-BJP".

Speaking about Congress party's victory, he added, "Congress has done incredible work in the last 2 years from the leadership right down to the junior most NSUI boy, everyone has worked hard and that has paid off in the election".

If the outgoing Badal government was known for lavish spending on oath-taking ceremonies and inaugurations of heritage streets and memorials, the message of the new government of Captain Amarinder Singh is every penny counts in debt-stressed Punjab.

On his promise of revival of industries, he said the industrial policy of the state would be liberalised to check the flight of industries and make Pun-jab an attractive destination for them.

The Congress swept the Punjab assembly elections in the results declared on Saturday, winning 77 out of 117 seats.

On the vexed issue of Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, Amarinder said it was important to see the quantum of water available with Punjab.

He said a Special Task Force (STF) will be set up to tackle the state's drug problem.

Nizami also informed that the phone of the clerics was now ringing, adding that they would be able to talk to them very soon. Meanwhile, a Dargah Committee meeting is underway in Delhi's Nizamuddin regarding the disappearances.

Calling for a "bigger role for regional leaders in states", Amarinder said it was vital to project a regional face who could identify with the people.

"It was only a ten-minute meeting and we are going back".

The AAP won 20 seats on debut, making it the second largest party in the Punjab Assembly.

So despite a comfortable majority, Captain will find it tough to run the state smoothly and the empty coffers will also make it hard to fulfil the poll promises the party had made in its manifesto.

Global tenders would soon be floated to procure smart phones as promised under the Captain Smart Connect programme launched ahead of the polls, ' he said.
