Novak Djokovic to miss Miami Open due to injury

It wasn't a remarkable season for him so far: final in Doha, fourth round at the Australian Open, title in Dubai and second round loss in Indian Wells to Vasek Pospisil.

Defending champion Djokovic apologised to fans who had bought tickets to see him play in Miami.

Andy Murray has confirmed that he will not take part in the 2017 Miami Open Masters after suffering an injury to his right elbow. The 2-time Miami victor noted in a statement that "the focus is now on getting ready for the clay season".

The rising American Taylor Fritz will replace Murray in the Miami draw with the tournament set to start on March 22.

The 29-year-old lost to Djokovic in the Qatar Open final before making a surprise last-16 exit to Mischa Zverev at the Australian Open.

Briton Murray will extend his lead at the top of the world rankings to more than 4,000 points as Djokovic will lose the points he earned from winning in Miami a year ago.

Murray has struggled to get going in most of his tournaments this season.

Murray has surpassed him as world number one and will hold an advantage of more than 4,000 ranking points over his rival come the end of the Miami Open where the victor gets 1,000.

Kyrgios' triumph over Djokovic ended the Serb's 19-match winning streak at Indian Wells, where he had won the last three titles to go with those he took in 2008 and 2011.
