PPL Center to host NCAA ice hockey regionals

"The entire Hockey East family is thrilled to once again be hosting the Frozen Four with our friends from TD Garden", said Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna in a statement. On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that Quinnipiac was selected as the site of the 2019 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship.

Functionally nothing changes for Penn State as the host team, but the Nittany Lions would play in Allentown if they were to make the postseason. Other schools in the tournament that year included Wisconsin and Mercyhurst.

It's the first time the school will host NCAA Hockey Championships with the men's and women's hockey programs having recently completed their fifth seasons as varsity programs. We hope to provide the same championship experience as we did in 2014 and excited to start the planning process.

The downtown Allentown arena, which has a standing-room capacity of over 9,000, will host the 2018 and 2019 NCAA Men's Hockey Midwest Regionals with Penn State University serving as the host institution. The 2021 NCAA Men's Frozen Four at PPG Paints Arena will take place April 8 and 10, 2021. In 2019, Manchester, New Hamphsire, and Providence, Rhode Island, will host men's hockey regionals.

Pittsburgh was awarded 22 preliminary rounds and finals, the most of any city, including the D-I wrestling final in 2019, the women's volleyball final in 2019 and the first and second round of the men's NCAA tournament in 2022. The city bid for the hosting rights earlier this year.

The event will be the last weekend in March. ME hasn't hosted an NCAA hockey tournament game since the regional format was introduced in 1992. (The men's regionals are routinely held at off-campus facilities.) The Lehigh Valley rink is almost a three-hour drive from Pegula Ice Arena, but that's still considerably closer than the last Midwest Regional that was held in Cincinnati (seven-hour drive).

On the men's side, the NCAA announced the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut as one of the 2018 regional sites for the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.
