India, Pakistan join China and Russia-led security bloc

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for coordinated efforts among Shanghai Cooperation Organisation members to fight terrorism and enhance connectivity without impinging upon sovereignty and territorial integrity.

India and Pakistan together joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the body of Eurasian states crafted by Russian Federation and China in the aftermath of the break-up of the Soviet Union essentially to deal with security concerns, as full members on Friday at the SCO's Astana summit in Kazakhstan.

He said that it was impossible to reach a solution till all countries made concerted efforts to fight radicalisation, terrorist recruitment, training and financing.

Welcoming the entry of Pakistan as full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a "good development" some experts and analysts on Friday said it would help further strengthen Pakistan's status in regional and global context.

Pakistan was diligently implementing China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC ), a flagship of One belt One Road initiative, he said, adding it would be beneficial for the entire SCO members.

The interaction between the two leaders is significant given the backdrop of deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan.

The prime minister in his speech at the summit also congratulated India which has also achieved the membership. While both sides denied any formal meeting was scheduled in Astana, the possibility of the two leaders exchanging greetings and an informal talk was speculated.

India has maintained that Chinese vision for a "Silk Road" to boost trade across the world would push all the member states in huge debts.

India and Pakistan joined SCO in first ever expansion since its inception 2001.
