Real Madrid publish announcement on Ronaldo's alleged fraud

Real Madrid have thrown their support behind star player Cristiano Ronaldo after he was accused of tax fraud.

Leaked documents in December previous year suggested that Ronaldo had avoided tax on income allegedly held in offshore accounts, which he also denied.

Ronaldo is the latest football star to fall foul of Spanish tax authorities.

Also Wednesday, Real Madrid issued a statement saying that it was convinced Ronaldo "will demonstrate his complete innocence".

In July previous year, the Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge, were sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud.

Allegedly, the hunky Ronaldo used a shell company located in the Virgin Islands to "create a screen in order to hide his total income from Spain's Tax Office".

The Barcelona striker and his father were found guilty of using companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes of €4.16m on income earned through the sale of image rights between 2007 and 2009.

It said that the footballer had not hidden any income from the tax authorities or defrauded Spain.

Ronaldo became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010, and opted to adhere to the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreign born workers in the country in November 2011.

However, Gestifute, a company owned by Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes, has released a statement insisting that the player's company was established in 2004, and is therefore not an offshore structure for evading tax payments.

The player's club, in a statement on the website, has come out to say that the player has fulfilled all "his fiscal obligations".

Prosecutors alleged that Ronaldo had defrauded the tax authorities of €1.4m in 2011, €1.7m in 2012, €3.2m in 2013 and €8.5m in 2014.

"There is no offshore structure for evading taxes".

Spanish prosecutors had on Tuesday filed a formal lawsuit against the Real Madrid striker.

Do you think Ronaldo will eventually be acquitted of any charges?
