Trump confirms he's under investigation

President Donald Trump acknowledged on Friday that he is personally under investigation as part of a widening probe into alleged Russian meddling in last year's US presidential race and possible collusion by his campaign, an inquiry that has cast a shadow over his five months in office.

But a person close to Trump's outside legal team who asked not to be named said Trump was merely reacting to news reports and hadn't been notified by the special counsel that he is a subject of the investigation.

Trump wrote on Twitter Friday that "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director". Rosenstein in a memo to Trump raised concerns over FBI Director James Comey.

Although Rosenstein's memo was extremely critical of former FBI Director James B. Comey, he technically did not formally recommend that Trump fire him.

USA TODAY previously reported that the FBI was investigating Kushner for his contact with Russian officials, but there was no word at that time that his financial dealings were part of the probe. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.

Late Thursday night, seemingly unprompted, deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - he of the James Comey firing memo and the appointment of Bob Mueller as special counsel in the Russian Federation investigation - put out a very odd statement on just how awful anonymously-sourced stories are. Citing unnamed sources, ABC reported Rosenstein told Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand she would have authority over the probe if he were to step aside. In March, Sessions recused himself from decision-making in the investigation.

"Such a law should allow for the reappointment of Bob Mueller, someone who has served Presidents of both parties and whom Democrats and Republicans have come to admire", he wrote. The Comey dismissal could become part of a widening investigation into whether the President tried to interfere with the ongoing Russian Federation probe. They are: Flynn; Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager; Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner; Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser; and Roger J. Stone Jr., an informal adviser to Mr. Trump.

Thursday night, Rosenstein issued an unusual statement complaining about leaks in the case.

In another indication of the seriousness of the probe, Michael Cohen, a personal attorney to Trump, said he has retained attorney Stephen Ryan, a former assistant USA attorney, to represent him in the ongoing probes. He has already been subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee.

The most important takeaway from the president's tweet, Gergen continued, "is that the president has launched a campaign to discredit the special counsel and to discredit the investigations. Witch Hunt", the President tweeted.

SUSAN COLLINS: If President Trump ordered you to fire the special counsel, what would you do? Mueller was appointed under a rarely used regulation that gives him a broad mandate to investigate just about anything he feels is necessary, which could ultimately include Rosenstein's role in Comey's firing.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked.
