Scalise still critical, but expected to recover: Doctor

Sava said doctors have controlled Scalise's internal bleeding and his vital signs are stable but that infection remains a serious risk.

Rep. Steve Scalise is still in critical condition, but his health is improving, the Congressman's surgeon said two days after Scalise was shot at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

"It's my job to be pessimistic, so if you accuse me of being optimistic, I feel bad about that", Sava said.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said.

Sava said Scalise would need to undergo an additional operation within the next 48 hours and more beyond that.

Scalise was among those shot by a gunman who attacked a GOP team baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

"I think his risk of death right now is substantially lower", Sava said.

Scalise was an enthusiastic participant in the ballgame - in 2015 he posted pictures from the many times he played in the competition against the Democrats' team.

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said. He died after officers in Scalise's security detail and local police fired at him. Sava said he wasn't ready to describe granular specifics of Scalise's injuries, such as whether he suffered nerve damage or identifying which organs had been struck.

Earlier Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan paid a visit to his injured colleague, who faces the prospect of a lengthy hospitalization after getting shot in the hip at a baseball practice by a deranged man with grudges against Trump and the GOP.

Ahead of the medical update, Scalise's chief of staff read a statement from the congressman's wife, Jennifer, who thanked people ― including President Donald Trump ― for their support.

Hodgkinson, the alleged shooter, was reported to have had several previous run-ins with the law, because he had no felony convictions he was able to purchase the weapons legally that police recovered from him after the shooting.

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
