Trump's friend Christopher Ruddy says President 'considering' firing Mueller

"If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller", Schiff said in a tweet.

Speculation had been rife earlier this week that Trump was considering the sacking of Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel to the investigation shortly after Comey's firing. And since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the investigation, Rosenstein is acting in that capacity.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", said spokesperson Mark Corallo.

The White House declined to comment, referring questions to Kasowitz.

When Mueller was appointed special counsel last month, Democrats and Republicans praised the decision. "We are not in a position to comment further".

Tuesday morning, in a statement to CNN, Ruddy disputed Spicer's comments.

Trump wrote in his letter firing Comey that the ousted FBI director had informed him on three separate occasions he was not under investigation. Grassley said Comey's dismissal and Comey's testimony on Lynch should be looked at together, noting that Comey "took the opportunity in his testimony to clear his own name by denouncing as false the administration's claims that the FBI rank-and-file had lost confidence in Mr. Comey's leadership in the wake of the Clinton email investigation".

Rosenstein said that because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation matter, Mueller could only be fired by Rosenstein himself. If Trump can be said to have close friends - and I am not sure that he is truly close to anyone outside of his immediate family - then Ruddy is a close friend.

Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, and now may fire special counsel Robert Mueller who is also conducting an investigation into Trump's Russian Federation connections.

Mueller was on Capitol Hill Tuesday discussing the probe with Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr of North Carolina and Virginia Sen.

Reports that Trump was considering firing Mueller surfaced last week, again citing unnamed sources.

The president previously said that fired FBI Director James Comey assured him in private conversation that he was not under investigation.

After the meeting with Mueller, Warner was asked by CNN's Manu Raju whether the committee is looking into obstruction of justice or if that was part of the special counsel investigation.

Ruddy said the president was weighing whether to dismiss Mueller because of concerns about conflicts of interest.
