Twins Lose Both Games Of Saturday Double Header

Jose Ramirez homered from both sides of the plate as the Cleveland Indians pulled into a tie with the Minnesota Twins with an 9-3 victory in the first game of Saturday's split doubleheader between the two teams.

The team filled the roster vacancy by recalling right-handed pitcher Adam Plutko from Triple-A Columbus.

So far the 2017 season has been an up and down one for the Cleveland Indians, as the team has largely underachieved through 63 games.

Cleveland 3rd baseman Jose Ramirez and center-fielder Bradley Zimmer each had four RBI's in game 1.

Wilk enters the game with 3.86 ERA against the Twins in his two relief outings. It was the first time the Orioles won a three-game series since May 29-31 against the Yankees. Cleveland kicks off a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins - the AL Central division leader - tonight.

Asked if it felt nice to get a share of first place, Francona looked down at his wristwatch.

"Got two pretty quick outs and then things just started snowballing", Turley said of the fifth. This is the intensity we need to bring on a day in, day out basis.

Edwin Encarnacion carried the offensive workload behind seven strong innings from Trevor Bauer to complete a four-game sweep of the Twins.

Ramirez touched off a three-run first inning with a two-out homer off Adam Wilk (0-2).

ROCKIES 5, GIANTS 1: Kyle Freeland tossed six solid innings, Tony Wolters drove in two runs and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants again, 5-1 on Saturday. Clevinger, who made his last start at Columbus, is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA against the Twins this season. McAllister, Bryan Shaw and Dan Otero combined for five scoreless innings in relief. The Minnesota bullpen didn't fare quite as well, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings of work.

"A frustrating series", Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

"He had a really slow start", said Francona, "but that slow start's over".

Ramirez is hitting.643 (9-for-14) with four runs, six doubles, two homers and eight RBI in his three-game sprint.

Yovani Gallardo (3-7) retired the first two batters in the opening inning before giving up five straight hits. He provided offensive support as well with a two-run double and a pair of homers. Merritt will start the first game.

Encarnacion maintained the power-hitting approach in his next at-bat, blasting a ball 164 feet in the air for a two-run shot to score Ramirez (walk).

The brutal performances by the starters against Cleveland was a reminder of the putrid efforts by the relievers in Houston's three-game sweep last month at Target Field.

"There's going to be good moments, there's going to be bad moments", he said. Somehow, we got to get past it and learn from it. He's been on the DL since June 4.

Erik Gonzalez singled and Jason Kipnis doubled in the fourth. The Twins, meanwhile, sent Ryan Pressly to the minors and made Wimmers their 26th man.

Mike Clevinger was cruising before rain ended his Saturday after four innings of his own, allowing just one on two hits and a walk. On Friday night, Thames game-ending shot in the 10th was the seventh home run of the game. "How would you take the news after you've pitched a couple of good games?"

"He's a guy that wants to be a difference maker", Molitor said. Combined with his 4 1/3 inning Game 5 performance and Saturday's start, Merritt has yet to walk a big-league batter in 19 1/3 total innings.

Twins: Adalberto Mejia (1-2) tries to rebound after allowing a career-high nine runs in 3 2-3 innings on Monday against Seattle.
