'Wonder Woman' soars in its second weekend as 'The Mummy' staggers

Its budget was $149 million. Ireland's box office figures come in on Tuesday, but it's likely it'll be the same tale of woe for the Dark Universe debut.

Tom Cruise and "The Mummy" comfortably headed the Chinese box office with a $52 million opening. While it might have come up short domestically, Cruise is still a big global movie star, and The Mummy pulled in more than $142 million. Wonder Woman hit the theaters on last weekend and did the record breaking first-weekend box office business at the United State box office. The three movies with Fraser and the spinoff starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, "The Scorpion King", totaled close to $1.5 billion in its worldwide box office.

With a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes going into the weekend (it's now at 17%), "The Mummy" was going to be DOA domestically by Sunday, and Universal would have to hope for a strong outing overseas to save face. His contributions to film criticism can be found in Magill's Cinema Annual, the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers, and the St. James Film Directors Encyclopedia (on which he collaborated with editor Andrew Sarris). It brought in $174 million globally, which is Cruise's biggest worldwide opening weekend ever. The movie cost about $125 million to make, as well as tens of millions to market.

And it seems as though The Mummy's performance will not change the plans the studio has for future films in the Dark Universe. We'll see where it goes from here. The success of "Wonder Woman" - now with $435 million globally - also points to a studio (Warner Bros.) pivoting after a poor response to previous DC Comics releases ("Suicide Squad", "Batman v. Superman"). The film is still sitting in decent shape and should be able to top out at $70 million or more domestically at the end of its run. Internationally, the fifth installment added another $34.8 million and has collected $464.4 million so far. It should be able to finish out at around $170 million domestically and profit margins will be questionable based on the $230 million production budget.

- Notable new releases "It Comes At Night" and "Megan Leavey" start below the Top 5. Its cumulative stands on $70.2 million after 10 days.

"It Comes at Night", $6 million.
