Wake up call for Olympic committee

Paris and Los Angeles were left as the only contenders for 2024 when Budapest withdrew its bid in February.

The two mayors, LA's Eric Garcetti and Anne Hidalgo of Paris, remained vague at a news conference Tuesday but it is believed that behind-the-scenes talks have already started. If they can't decide, the International Olympic Committee will vote in September.

If an agreement is reached by the bid committees and the IOC both the 2024 and 2028 hosts will be announced at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru which runs from September 13 -17.

In congratulating the IOC, AOC Chief Executive Matt Carroll said the decision was not just a great initiative for the Olympic Games but was of great benefit to our member sports.

Coates revealed that if changes proposed to the bidding process for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympics were successful they would be extended to the campaign for the 2032 Summer Games. After the International Olympic Committee three times failed to return the Games to the city where the International Olympic Committee was established in 1894, it was surely time for Paris again to host the event, exactly 100 years after the last time, the "Chariots of Fire' Games in 1924".

He has been on record supporting Los Angeles' bid since shortly after his election in November, and reportedly called IOC President Thomas Bach to lobby for the city.

Garcetti, one of several L.A. delegation members who spoke Tuesday, sought to reinforce the point as he closed the city's presentation. "Second, we're not focussed on the last 100 years, we are focussed on the next 100. None of us can afford more of the same". "We lost three times in the race for the Games, we do not want to lose a fourth time".

Le Figaro paper yesterday welcomed "the return of the (Olympic) flame" but said the hard work was only starting now, such as keeping the public on their side and assuring them that costs will not explode as at previous Games or other upcoming editions such as Tokyo 2020.

"Look at me. My heritage is African". Then, the members will likely endorse Bach's proposal to award two Summer Games at once when they next meet on September 13 in Lima, Peru. I have visited many countries across Africa and have witnessed first-hand the important role that sport and the Olympic Games play on the African continent.

The Games were previously staged in Paris in 1900 and 1924, and in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984.

Trump met in the Oval Office last month with Bach and "pledged his full support" for the Los Angeles bid, as the White House put it.
