She also served as the Canadian Space Agency's chief astronaut between 2000 and 2007. She spent a total of 25 days on these missions working at the International Space Station.

But her appointment could also make Canadians question the need to tie the Governor General to Royal Family, said Philippe Lagasse, an associate professor of worldwide affairs at Carleton University.

Speaking after the appointment was confirmed, the 53-year-old said: "This is a very great honour for me and my family, for my friends and my colleagues here around the country, on the planet and even a few outside the planet". Her career as an astronaut began in 1992, when she was chosen from a pool of 5,330 applicants to become one of four astronauts selected to join the Canadian Space Agency.

Payette logged over 611 hours in space.

Canada's Governor General has several responsibilities and acts as the Queen's main representative. She also flew on space shuttles Endeavour and Discovery.

"She plays the piano and has sung with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, the Piacere Vocale in Basel, Switzerland, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto".

The former astronaut will succeed David Johnston, who has held the position for seven years. "I expected a lot of her in the early days, and I expect a lot from her now".

While most Canadians will recognize the title Governor General, not all citizens may know exactly what the prestigious role entails.

"Anything she sets her mind, she will achieve it", said Kumar of Payette.

"You can imagine though that it might be related, some of it, to science, technology and moving forward in a society of knowledge", she said.
