Per Mertesacker "very confident" Alexis Sanchez will stay at Arsenal

Alexis Sanchez may have offered his strongest hint of likely Arsenal exit after bearing his mid out yesterday that he wants to play in the glamorous UEFA Champions League this coming season.

As reported by Radio Sport Chile, the Arsenal superstar said: "I want to play in the Champions League". Now I'm waiting for Arsenal to reply and tell me what they want.

Sanchez's words will worry Arsenal fans, particularly given boss Arsene Wenger has said that they have not made a bid for in-demand Monaco star Kylian Mbappe.

Sanchez, who was the North London side's top scorer last season with 24 league goals in 38 matches, is entering the final year of his contract and is yet to sign a new deal.

Merson is concerned that Arsenal will find themselves finishing outside the Champions League qualification spots for a second year running should they fail to keep hold of former Barcelona forward Alexis.

World Cup victor Mertesacker said: "He needs a break now".

"He's a good player - if I were Arsenal I'd be ringing up Man City and saying 'Give us Aguero and you can have Sanchez'".

"In the last two games we focused a lot on attacking ... It is something that I have dreamed about it since I was little".

The star man is now away from the rest of the Gunners squad in Australia - after being given extra time off this summer due to his Confederations Cup commitments. 100 per cent, I expect him to stay. You can not find those everywhere.

"He's got one more year here and then he makes his mind up... but it's his decision".

Yet if you look at the headlines, you will see what you have been seeing all summer. After that it's free to imagine what you want.
