High amount of marijuana discovered in new Ford cars made in Mexico

The Associated Press reports that more than 400 pounds of marijuana has been discovered inside 15 vehicles made in Mexico and sent to OH and Pennsylvania.

The vehicles were manufactured at the Ford plant in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico before being shipped by rail to Lordstown, Ohio.

Silverio Balzano, agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Youngstown office, says the drugs were found between July 7 and July 1 at a Ford dealership in Youngstown, Ohio, according to WDRB. But somewhere along the line, something went wrong.

Each auto was packed with about 32 pounds of marijuana. In total, marijuana was found in 15 cars in four counties in Ohio, Balzano said, and a couple even surfaced in Pennsylvania.

But apparently that's not the only option that dealers have to get drugs into the U.S. They can also smuggle them using cars manufactured in Mexico. This is the first time that Ohio6 had seen Mexican marijuana shipped in cars, but it was not the first time it has been tried.

A similar smuggling attempt was discovered in March in Minnesota, where BNSF Railway police found 217 pounds of marijuana in seven vehicles, according to a Facebook posting by the police in Dilworth, Minnesota. Again, the Ford Fusions were put together in Mexico.

"We're aware of the situation and are taking it very seriously", a Ford Motor Company spokesman said Saturday. The discovery led investigators to a rail yard where more marijuana was discovered. They said that along with Customs agents and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, they are investigating the incident extensively.

The Portage County Sheriff's Drug Task Force is working with the DEA in the investigation. They called it a serious crime and will not rest until the mystery is solved. The only high the customer should get is from driving the sporty Ford cars, and not from marijuana.
