Sonic Mania Special Stages, Bonus Stages, & Time Attack Footage Revealed

Following SEGA's San Diego Comic-Con announcement that Special Stages will be a feature in Sonic Mania, today the team revealed that Bonus Stages ("Blue Spheres") and Time Attack have also been included in the game.

Sonic Mania is looking more and more like the new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game that we always wanted, and with the addition of classic-style bonus stages, special stages and a new time attack mode, we're definitely pretty excited for the game. Problem is, you're going to need to turn on a dime extremely often if you want to clear these stages successfully, because every blue sphere turns red once you've touched it - and as you probably guessed, making contact with a red orb results in instant failure. Collect all blue spheres and all rings, and you'll achieve a ideal score and a Gold Medallion. Touching a red sphere instantly ends the Bonus Stage. Those are found in the Special Stages, which are infinitely more enjoyable than their Bonus cousins.

The special stages are much like the Sonic Dash game on the mobile, where you race on a set track in 3D mode. These are far fewer and players enter them through a giant gold ring that's hidden in the level. Meanwhile, the Special Stages have you trying to catch a UFO.

In the Special Stages, players have to chase down enemy UFOs to secure Chaos Emeralds (yay!).

Unfortunately, Sega left that as a mystery, but the stage adds to the retro feel of "Sonic Mania". The rings give him more time in the stage while the blue balls increases his speed.

Sonic Mania will come to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on August 15, 2017.

The time attack mode is where you can compete against other players on an online leaderboard.
