Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott suspended 6 games for conduct

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has defended Elliott throughout the NFL's investigation.

This investigation started more than a year ago when Elliott's ex-girlfriend accused him of abuse and while the Columbus City Attorney's office did not pursue charges due to "conflicting and inconsistent information", the National Football League is well within its right to take action, even without legal action being taken.

Elliott has three business days to file a notice of appeal, and a hearing must be scheduled within 10 days of receipt of the notice, according to Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement, which governs appeal of commissioner discipline.

Just how tough will it be to replace Ezekiel Elliott, who was suspended for six games on Friday by the NFL?

So with Elliott already being one of the best backs in the league and one of the main reasons for the team's success last season, it comes as no surprise that Jones would be as upset as he appears to be.

The NFL Players' Association also issued a statement saying it is reviewing the league's decision and has been "in touch with Ezekiel and his representatives to consider all options". He is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games. If his suspension is upheld before the regular season starts, he'd be added to the Cowboys' roster on Monday, Oct. 23, after Dallas' game against the San Francisco 49ers. Police say he was present during a bar fight at Clutch Bar in Uptown Dallas last month, but have since suspended their investigation over uncooperative witnesses.

USA TODAY Sports does not identify alleged victims of domestic violence.

The 22-year-old was never arrested and prosecutors declined to charge him, citing conflicting and inconsistent information. According to the police report, Elliott told authorities that she "became angry over a social media incident and upset because she was asked to leave his apartment and go back to OH".

The NFL has long had a clear policy regarding the punishment for drug violations, but there was inconsistency surrounding the punishments for other offenses. Players are subject to minimum six-game suspension for domestic violence, although that can be reduced or increased based upon the circumstances.

Elliott was also seen removing a woman's top at a St. Patrick's Day party earlier this year and being accused of breaking a D.J.'s nose at a Dallas night club this summer. He was allegedly involved in an altercation at a Dallas area bar. The six-game ban is the penalty for first-time offenders of the league's new domestic violent policy.
