Eagles trade Jordan Matthews to Bills for CB Ronald Darby

Darby, the Bills' second-rounder in 2015, was a starting corner for Buffalo previous year and was expected to take on an even bigger load in the wake of Stephon Gilmore's departure in free agency. "It goes to the player that we got, the position that we're acquiring and how hard it is to find those guys".

But Matthews was entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract and instead of trying to gamble on re-signing him next season, the Eagles chose to get something back for him - although in the process, they also had to part ways with a third-rounder. Whether it will have been worth it or not depends entirely on whether Darby rebounds and becomes a consistent starting cornerback for the Eagles. And keep in mind that would be a 30-50 pass increase over last season.

"We were not out there shopping Jordan Matthews", Roseman said. This move comes on the heels of Buffalo trading Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick next year. He had 121 tackles, 32 passes defensed, three tackles for loss, and two interceptions with the Bills.

Some of this might be reshuffling of some National Football League deck chairs - getting rid of good young players who won't get expensive contracts for other good young players who might - but for the Eagles, it took their primary problem in the secondary and made it disappear. After the additions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and with Mack Hollins and Marcus Johnson also having strong training camps, the Eagles could afford to part with somebody. Darby is the fourth player from the Bills to join the Eagles' defense in the last two seasons. It never gets any easier in this business because however good he is as a player, he's a better person. But it hurts when people you care about leave.

In Buffalo, Jordan will be reunited with running back LeSean McCoy, who was his Eagles teammate in 2014 before being traded to the Bills. "But we have to do what's best in moving forward".
