New Hampshire hospital evacuated due to 'chemical release'

Ambulances from multiple area communities responded to Exeter Hospital around 11 a.m. after a report of some sort of "chemical release" in the emergency room.

Video from SkyEye shows a large number of people seated on stretchers in the grass outside the hospital.

A mother taking her newborn to the pediatrician at the hospital said staff told her that only the emergency room is impacted.

State and local officials are still working to determine a cause.

A statement from the hospital said all other hospital wings were unaffected by the problem and running as usual.

No patients experienced any symptoms but six were transported from the emergency room, she added. There were initial reports that carbon monoxide might have been the cause, but fire officials said test results came back negative. They said about 20 people are being treated in the parking lot.

The extent of the chemical release is not yet known. In an abundance of caution we evacuated the OR and closed it'.

Vasapolli said it's unknown whether any surgeries had been in progress at the time and had to be stopped.
