State responds to Gorka, says Tillerson carries a 'big stick'

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis: North Korea "would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates".

"These statements are irresponsible and unsafe, and also senselessly provide a boon to domestic North Korean propaganda, which has long sought to portray the United States as a threat to their people", the letter read. But when asked how he would gauge the threat from North Korea, the Secretary said it is "a threat to world peace and global order" and that the human toll from such an attack would be "catastrophic".

Speaking at an event in California on Thursday, Mattis said his mission and responsibility was to have military options ready "should they be needed" but stressed the United States effort is now focused on diplomacy.

President Donald Trump again stepped up the rhetoric against North Korea on Thursday, saying an earlier threat to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it launched an attack was not tough enough.

North Korea responded by claiming it is preparing a plan to fire missiles at the United States territory of Guam in the western Pacific.

US defense and national security officials have repeatedly touted the capabilities of the USA missile defense shield over the last several weeks, in the wake of a pair of successful test launches by North Korea of its latest intercontinental ballistic missile in July. North Korea says it will "keep closely watching the speech and behavior of the U.S".

"The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with the U.S.in tackling this threat and many others".

"That would be the clearest indication that we were headed toward war", Pollack says.

Gorka's statements come amid confusion about the administration's policy toward North Korea after a series of statements that have been dramatically different in tone and have sent starkly different messages.

But it also said that if the US and South Korea took a first strike against North Korea, China should intervene.

And he points to another sign that the U.S.is not moving toward war with North Korea: There have been no efforts to evacuate the at least 150,000 USA citizens living in South Korea. "We never do. I don't talk about it", Trump told reporters when asked about a preemptive strike.

It also said that China and Russian Federation should enhance coordination to let other parties know they would not stand aside should their security be threatened by the escalating tensions.
