36 killed in China road accident

At least 36 people were killed and 13 others injured in an expressway accident in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Thursday night, authorities said Friday morning.

Rescue work is underway. Twisted metal was strewn in front of the bus, several windows were broken and a front tyre was blown out. Victims were taken to nearby hospitals.

The bus was carrying 49 passengers on its way to Luoyang from the city of Chengdu. Local media said two children were aboard.

Sichuan province is already reeling from another tragedy as 23 people were killed and hundreds injured in an quake that struck the region on Tuesday night.

The toll from Thursday's road accident was almost twice as high as casualties reported so far, 20 dead, from a powerful natural disaster that rocked western China's Sichuan province two days earlier. According to official statistics, 58 000 people were killed in accidents in 2015, a figure that is stable compared to the previous year.

Ltd, the coach has a designed carrying capacity of 51 people. Just last month, 11 people were killed when a bus collided with a truck on a highway in Hebei province.
