8 swine flu deaths reported in Odisha

So far, 84 patients have tested positive for the disease in the state, with 13 cases reported on Thursday.

Bhubaneswar: Swine flu and dengue menaces have spread their alarming tentacles across the state, even as the state government Sunday assured people of all possible measures to tackle the situation.

The Minister told the house that 365 dengue cases, 246 chikungunya cases and 356 malaria cases were also reported in Delhi. "Most of the swine flu cases in Odisha happen to be migration cases as the disease is reported in some other parts of the country too", Health Secretary P K Meherda said.

Speaking on the dengue outbreak, Meherda informed that at least 370 persons have been tested positive while two deaths have been reported so far this year.

He advised people to avoid self-medication and to wash hands at regular intervals since the disease was contagious. The swine flu lab, which had become operational two years ago, is proving a boon for patients as reports are readily available in a short period of time. Many patients are from outside as per the district health authorities.

Officials said steps have also been taken for purchase of necessary equipment, ventilators and other gadgets for proper functioning of special wards for treatment of swine flu patients.
